This mini lesson includes a video that explores the lost history of Memphis’ Chinatown, which began in 1873 and was an important part of Beale Street. It highlights how many Chinese Americans moved to Memphis after the transcontinental railroad was completed, opening laundromats and restaurants that served the community during segregation. The Chinese Historical Society of Memphis is now working to preserve this important history that many people, including Chinese Americans, may not even know about. Along with historical context, speaker notes, and age group specific discussion questions, teachers can facilitate this as an opener/closer to a lesson or during May AANHPI Heritage Month.
